Horror Finds

The following video and photos are from customer's houses where dangerous faults and poor workmanship have been detected by our firm.

This video was filmed in a property in Blackhill. The customer noticed black marks on her wall surrounding her fire and called out her gas engineer. He told the customer it was safe to use. As you will see from this video, it clearly was not...

The chimney was blocked and the fire was not fitted correctly.
Photos 3 & 4 are a view looking down the chimney from the stack. It shows a birds nest blocking the chimney.
Photos 5 & 6 show the debris that came down after the chimney had been swept.

Photos 7 & 8 are a view looking up the chimney showing that the engineer who fitted the fire most likely pulled down the flue liner and probably knocked the cowl off the top of the chimney stack. In photo 9 you can see there is no terminal on the chimney to prevent birds and debris getting in. Photo 10 shows the fixing bracket for the surround which was extremely heavy and was not fixed back to the wall.

Photos 11, 12 & 13 show the view from the fireplace opening around the inside of surround. You can clearly see daylight all the way around as the fire had not been sealed. The black marks that can be seen in photo 14 show were carbon monoxide has leaked into the room due to the poor installation and the blocked chimney. Photos 15 & 16 are from a different property and show a corroded flue that was hidden within the wall and was only discovered on renewing the boiler.

Solar Powered Hot Water Systems

Renewable energy is something our firm strongly believes in and is becoming more common in domestic dwellings throughout the North East. The cheapest form of renewable energy is solar powered hot water systems, in which our firm has accreditation to install.

Solar water heating systems use solar panels, called collectors, fitted to your roof. These collect heat from the sun and use it to warm water which is stored in a hot water cylinder.

There are two types of solar water heating panels, they are evacuated tubes and flat plate collectors. Flat plates collectors can be fixed on the roof tiles or integrated into the roof.

Solar power can not be the only heat source. A boiler or immersion heater is needed to back up the cylinder, mainly in winter months or cloudy days when there is less sun. The cylinder must be heated up to 60°C each day to prevent Legionella disease
